Angry voices
Over 100 people witnessed angry confrontations and bitter personal accusations at the ‘Voice of the People’ (VOTP) meeting on March 24th. Calls for respect and order allowed a few strong voices to be heard, speaking of the ‘poverty trap’ and lack of jobs and facilities, but the meeting drifted away with no clear conclusion...

Caught in the middle
The last Messenger listed projects the New Deal team say have received ‘community endorsement’, but many have since questioned when endorsement was given. John Clark, New Deal Chief Executive, said he wasn’t satisfied with the system of Theme Groups approving projects either, but was caught between ‘a rock and a hard place’ as people also complained of a lack of action...

Burngreave Messenger

The outbreak of war has affected all of us in Burngreave. Many feel powerless and scared for relatives or friends caught up in the fighting and efforts are being made locally to maintain harmony (see War in Iraq, but Pitsmoor remains one community).

The low New Deal election turnout this year is further evidence of the frustration and anger that have developed because of New Deal’s slow progress (see Angry voices).

As year three gets underway there is promise that big projects like the Community Learning Campaign are getting underway. The new Community Reps (see the NDC pages) face tough challenges as they lead the New Deal programme and try to ensure all voices are represented.

The Messenger wishes them every success and hopes they bring a united and effective community voice to the table.
