Pampering
and Health a must for women
By Chetna Patel
Over
120 women and children celebrated international women’s day…
with a bit of a difference, by examining health issues.
At the event
on 14th March, at Verdon Recreation Centre, pampering opportunities
like hair, beauty and massage, were provided as well as health information
on smoking, healthy eating and mental health.
The event was
organised and funded by North Sheffield Primary Care Trust (PCT)
and Homestart. One of the organisers, Fatima Musa of the PCT said
“It was very positive to see women from Burngreave’s
communities mixing, talking and enjoying themselves as well as getting
information. Local women used their skills for the community by
providing massage, herbalism, hair and beauty. It was brilliant
to see such a big turnout.”
Local woman
Fozia said “It was very useful day and I enjoyed doing different
activities. It is very important to relax. A lot of women can’t
afford to pay for facials and beauty treatments so this is a good
opportunity to get these treatments.”
Stall provider
Pam Allen said “These sorts of events make people feel less
threatened about discussing issues around mental health.”
Once delicious
mouth-watering Arabic dishes cooked by local women were eaten, women
engaged in energetic chairobics provided by Sports and Community
Recreation.
The community
development and health workers are looking to organise a Men’s
health day soon. To get involved contact Fatima on 271 6971or
