Plant
a tree in 2003
By Gaby Spinks and Richard Gill
The
event, organised by the Council’s Trees & Woodlands and
Ranger Teams, marked the start of the Burngreave Green Environment
Programme’s Community Forestry Project.
The trees were
planted in partnership with the Friends of Osgathorpe Park, the
Firvale Youth Project and Tinsley Tree Project. A total of 1,733
native trees were planted, including varieties of Rowan, Wild Cherry,
Ash, Silver Birch, Maple, Oak, Hazel and Hawthorn.
Thanks to the
more than 60 enthusiastic volunteers who helped to make it such
a success. Local children from Burngreave Holiday Playscheme all
helped out digging and planting the new whips. The area of new woodland
was expanded still further with the planting of more than a thousand
trees around the neighbouring Whiteways School playing field, by
more than 270 enthusiastic pupils and staff assisted by the Council’s
Trees & Woodlands and Ranger Teams.
