Making Burngreave Safer Residents of Burngreave look set to benefit from safer homes – thanks to a major new initiative funded by Burngreave New Deal for Communities aiming to cut the number of burglaries and reduce the fear of crime in the area. Up to 1,100 homes – 25% of the households in the area – will have their security improved by a range of measures, including fitting burglar alarms, new door and window locks, spy holes and smoke alarms, cutting back overgrown shrubs, and installing security lighting. An additional benefit is the creation of jobs for Burngreave’s young people. Three trainees aged between 16 and 18 will be recruited – and experience with similar schemes elsewhere in the city has shown that the trainees will have a good chance of finding long-term work once the scheme is completed. BNDfC Chief Executive John Clark said that the Safer Homes initiative was an excellent example of the kind of project New Deal was keen to support: “Reducing both actual crime and the fear of crime have been identified as key priorities by the local community and helping people to feel more secure in their own homes is essential. Combining direct benefits to local people along with employment and training opportunities is a vital part of our approach to the regeneration of Burngreave, and we are confident that this initiative will be welcomed by people throughout the area.” The scheme will be managed by Sheffield City Council’s Housing Department who have experience of managing similar projects elsewhere in the city.
