Sheffield
Carers' Centre
by Amreen Akhar, Outreach Development Worker
Some
of you, though you spend many hours a week looking after someone,
may not recognise yourselves as carers. We aim to get in touch with
and support 'hidden carers' across Sheffield.
A carer is someone
who, without payment, provides help and support to someone who could
not manage otherwise because of frailty, illness or disability.
Carers can be relatives, partners, friends or neighbours. They come
from all backgrounds, can be of any age (including children) and
have different sexual orientations.
At Sheffield
Carers' Centre we offer emotional support and help getting services.
Trained volunteer carers or former carers, provide a friendly, confidential
listening ear and a wide range of information on our Helpline. You
are welcome to call in for a chat, to look round or for afternoon
tea and biscuits at our Charles Street Centre.
We also hold
coffee mornings at the Quaker Meeting House on the first Tuesday
of every month,10.30 till 12.00. We have a mailing list which is
free to join. You receive our carers' information pack, emergency
card and newsletter every other month to let you know what is happening
in Sheffield and UK wide.
The centre also
holds art, walking and writing groups and aromatherapy sessions,
all free to carers.
