Healthy eating hits Burngreave and Fir Vale

by Chetna Patel, North Sheffield PCT

Increasing numbers of people are suffering from diabetes and heart disease. This could be reduced by developing a heathier lifestyle - eating more fruit and vegetables, cutting down on fats and sugars and keeping fit. However it's not always easy and a number of local initiatives are taking place to help people eat more healthily...

Six parents at Owler Brook school have completed a 10 week training course on healthy eating. The training included exploring healthy foods, cultural foods and reducing fats and sugars. It was funded by North Sheffield Primary Care Trust (NSPCT).

Parents learned about nutritional labelling and adapting recipes for different cultures. To encourage healthy lifestyles an aerobic session was run. This was received enthusically, many expressing an interest in having regular aerobic activities.

The course ended with a celebration event with women from all nationalities cooking traditional dishes using healthier alternatives. Gary McCulloch (NSPCT) gave out certificates to participants on the course.

The course is due to run again at the beginning of February.
