Blunkett visits Jamal Mosque
by Rob Smith
Local Islamic leaders and Church representatives, press,
radio and police gathered inside Fir Vale's Jamal Mosque, playing
host to Home Secretary David Blunkett.
I spoke to the Mosque's Vice President Malik Nazir and Mohamed
Rashid prior to the arrival of Mr Blunkett. "It’s not
a political meeting," explained Malik, "It’s a party
to welcome the Home Secretary from the mosque community."
People began to take their seats. Inspector Brennan, sat alongside
Commander Ted Cassidy, joined by Cllr Ibrar Hussain. Also Rev Carol
Parker of Trinity Methodists explained how her church has been working
closely with the Muslim community here.
On arrival Mr Blunkett was flanked by three heavy security personnel
and then led to the front by trusted members of the Mosque. Vice
Secretary of the mosque thanked Mr Blunkett for coming and for the
financial assistance that has enabled them to erect a new radio
transmitter.
Invited to address the audience, Mr Blunkett got to his feet and
spoke about the attack on the 11th of September 2001, and the effects
this has had globally and on all diverse communities. He also spoke
of the patience it will take to overcome the threat of terrorism
that is affecting us all. Reflecting briefly on the Northern Ireland
problem, he assured all present that in the hunt for those individuals
involved in terrorism, communities like this one won’t be
targeted. He added that proper and thorough investigative work will
be carried out by the relevant agencies, before they move to take
down any suspects.
Mentioning his recent trip to Pakistan the Home Secretary added
his pleasure at being here to open the new radio transmission at
the Mosque. He also said clearly that "This community belongs
to us all and we shall share it together."
