Boost
for children’s reading
Children
in the Burngreave New Deal for Communities (BNDfC) area in Sheffield
had an extra present over the festive season – every child
aged up to 16 received a present of a £10 book voucher from
BNDfC.
The vouchers
went out to more than 2,000 children in the area, mostly by post,
but one lucky group of children from Byron Wood School took a trip
to Waterstones in Orchard Square to receive their gift – and
pick out the book they wanted to spend it on.
BNDfC Education
Theme Manager Permjeet Dhoot met the Byron Wood children to hand
over their vouchers – and she is confident that the children
will have had a great time reading their new books over the school
holiday.
“Education
has been identified as a key priority by Burngreave New Deal for
Communities residents – and getting children off to the right
start with a love of books and reading gives them a real boost throughout
their entire education.”
Joanne Cooke,
Learning Mentor at Byron Wood School added:
“This is a brilliant initiative for the school and the children
were really excited about visiting the bookstore and collecting
their books.”
They’re
behind you!
More
than 1,000 children in the Burngreave area have been getting to
know a bit more about the age old pantomime tradition – thanks
to a series of theatre visits sponsored by BNDfC.
All four local
primary schools – Byron Wood, Firs Hill, Pye Bank and St Catherine’s
– were offered the chance to take the whole school to the
theatre.
First in the
stalls were children from Firs Hill Community School. Ten coaches
– sadly not quite the original pumpkin and horses –
transported the entire school, from nursery children through to
11-year olds, and their teachers into another world for the afternoon.
Before the visit,
Dina Martin, Headteacher of Firs Hill Community School, said the
children and staff were really looking forward to the visit:
“For many
of our children, it is their first visit to the theatre and it’s
lovely that Burngreave New Deal for Communities have been able to
fund this event – something tangible that the children are
sure to remember.”
