Blood
donor
The
National Blood Service (NBS) is urging local people to think about
adding their support at a forthcoming blood donor session.
Blood is a vital
part of treatment for a wide variety of patients, including those
undergoing surgical procedures and accident and emergency cases.
It is also vital for helping patients suffering from serious blood
disorders such as leukaemia, and is key in the treatment of sickle
cell anaemia and thalassaemia.
Helen Shepherd
(NBS) told the Messenger, “Hospitals in Sheffield need more
than 100 units of blood every single day and we always need more
blood donors. In particular, we need to ensure that our donor base
reflects every ethnic community, as patients are more likely to
find a suitable transfusion match with someone who shares their
ethnic background.”
It only takes
about half an hour to give blood, it’s virtually painless
and the range of biscuits on offer is second to none! What’s
more, every donation helps to save or improve someone’s life.
In most cases,
anyone aged between 17–60, who weighs more than 7 stones 12
pounds and is in general good health can become a blood donor.
The Sheffield
Blood Donor Centre, Church Street, Sheffield is open on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am–4.30pm, and Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 12pm–7pm.
Blood donor
sessions are also being held at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Penistone
Road on Sunday February 9th from 10am–12.30pm and 2pm–4pm.
