Women and the art of car maintenance

Women who are fed up with having to wait for a man to change a flat tyre or check their oil are being offered the chance to learn basic car maintenance skills on a new training course supported by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) South Yorkshire.

The free course provided jointly by the Black Women’s Resource Centre and the Ellesmere Community Trust, is specifically aimed at black women living in Burngreave, but sessions will be open to anyone who has ever mistakenly put oil in the windscreen wash container or had difficulty locating their dipstick.

The course will take place in the car park of SADACCA on the Wicker. It’s aim is to give a basic understanding of car maintenance so that trainees are able to maintain their vehicle, repair it in the event of breakdown, and have a greater understanding of costs should it have to go to a garage.

The two-hour long training sessions will be held on Wednesdays between 1-3pm and 6-8pm, and will be given by qualified mechanics. The course leads to a basic car maintenance qualification accredited by the Open College Network (OCN).

Dawn Johnson from the Black Women’s Resource Centre said:
“It’s important that women don’t have to rely on anyone else to maintain or repair their vehicle, so this is about helping them to do it for themselves.

“Of course not all women are helpless when it comes to cars, and certainly not all men are experts, but traditionally women have had less involvement in this area and the course aims to address that.”

The LSC South Yorkshire is supporting the course – with money from the European Social Fund (ESF). Executive Director John Korzeniewski said: “We are pleased to be supporting training like this. In the short term it provides really valuable skills for women in an area which has traditionally been seen as male-dominated, but hopefully it may also prove to be the first step into further learning.”
