Burngreavers go to Goa

Local residents Beverley Blake and Ian Pugh are preparing for an exciting trip to Goa in November, but this is not a holiday break, they are going to help the poverty stricken children of the area.

As part of the El Shaddai Charitable Trust Ltd, volunteers from Sheffield have been raising money to buy educational equipment and they are hoping to buy a bus in Goa so that children will be able to attend the school they have set up there.

Ian Pugh is a qualified teacher and has been volunteering in Goa for years. Ian grew up in care in Burngreave and was a resident at Osborn House. “People are very poor and the children have no chance of an education,” he explained. “The school will give the children hope, and let them know that there are people that care.”

This is Beverley’s first trip to Goa, where she will be looking after children, and helping them with life skills and building their confidence.

“It will be a good experience. It’s a different life out there, it makes you appreciate your own life.”

Can you help?

Donations of school equipment would be gratefully received. There is a particular demand for football tops, underwear, socks and swimming costumes. They are also looking for a laptop computer for both children and admin staff at the school. Any thing fun for the children would also be useful, they have had lots of enjoyment from a magic set donated last year. If you would like to donate money please make cheques payable El Shaddai Charitable Trust Ltd and send to Curtis House, 25 Upper Albert Road, Sheffield, S8 9HR.
