International
Women’s Day
by Margaret Gibson & Faiza Shaibi
International Women’s Day is a
day of celebration for women all over the globe and this year
the women of Burngreave came together to celebrate at the
Spectrum Centre. The light drizzle didn’t deter the
350 women who attended the event.
It was planned by a syndicate of women from
various organisations including Sure Start, MAAN, North Sheffield
NHS Primary Care Trust, Refugee Women’s Project (YRO),
and New Deal for Communities.
Many organisations in Burngreave worked very
hard to make the day a great success. The morning workshops
included women’s health, drugs awareness, khat information
workshop, healthy eating and design for living. During the
afternoon there were ‘pampering’ activities including
Indian head massage, henna, hair and beauty, shiatsu massage,
nails and facials. The afternoon’s entertainment included
Arabic and Somalian music and dance.
Lunch was prepared by Laila Wragg. There were
generous donations of fruit and drinks received. Surestart
provided the crèche at Verdon Recreation Centre.
By midday the sun was blazing down on what turned
out to be a very successful event. It provided local women
with opportunities to mingle meet and chat with other women
and to share and exchange ideas. We hope that everybody had
a very enjoyable day whether it was through learning something
interesting or through taking part in the relaxation and fun
activities.
The next health event in Burngreave
will be about asthma.
BCAF health group are organising an asthma awareness
health day on Saturday 15th May 11.30am–2.30pm at St
James Church, Scott Road. The event will provide information,
advice and support from a local doctor and complementary therapists.
Crèche and lunch provided. For further information
