Greening Burngreave!
The Green Environment Programme has
made some real advances over the past year in making Burngreave
a pleasant environment to work and relax in.
The Burngreave Team, which consists of Sheffield
Wildlife Trust officers, Burngreave Ranger and Community Forestry
team and Green City Action workers have achieved many things
over the past 12 months, the highlights of which include:
- A comprehensive green audit of all the
open space in Burngreave
- An Action Plan – setting out the
strategy for improving the green spaces over the next seven
years
- A series of hugely popular arts and environment
taster training courses at Abbeyfield Park stables
- The ongoing refurbishment of Abbeyfield
Park playground with new equipment, and weatherproofing
Burngreave Cemetery’s chapel to prevent rain getting
in
- Clearing the paths at Burngreave Recreation
Ground after you told us you couldn’t get there easily
- Repair and painting of benches at Abbeyfield,
Ellesmere and Osgathorpe Parks
- Opening up sightlines into play areas
by thinning and
pruning the trees and shrubs after you told us you didn’t
feel safe
- Carried out access and clearance works
to improve usage of Harlestone Street playing field
- Tidied up lots of parks and open spaces
after the consultation told us that litter and fly tipping
were some of the main issues that stopped you using your
local park
- Planted native and specimen trees in Burngreave,
including an avenue of ‘One World’ planting
at Burngreave Cemetery
- Run fortnightly ‘Greenstars’
children’s environmental club at Abbeyfield Park
- Provided 6 full-time, year-long paid trainee
positions, with 50% filled by Burngreave residents, one
of whom has since moved on and secured a job as a City Council
Ranger.
