Greening up local Surgery

In December and February, a team of volunteers organised by Burngreave Health Visiting student Mary Thorneloe, with the help of the local Greenwatch Ranger, Henk Littlewood, got their hands dirty to brighten up the grounds around Sheffield Medical Centre on Spital Street.

The surgery itself is a welcoming modern building, but the derelict building nearby, the dumped rubbish at the back and the security fence around it all make it a less inviting sight.

So with bulbs supplied by the Area Panel Coordinater, Kieron Williams, and trees supplied by Greenwatch, a hardworking team including surgery staff, local volunteers, a Park, Woodland and Countryside tree officer and people under the Probation Service and Youth Offending Team spent a couple of hours over two Sunday mornings planting out the grounds.

Henk Littlewood also provided a rustic bench to sit on and overlook the city view, and contacted the Council’s Streetforce, who have made a good start in clearing up the dumped items behind the surgery.

We were lucky with great weather both days (for the time of year!), and had a good time getting to know each other whilst getting a breath of fresh air, a bit of exercise, and making the place a bit brighter.

It’s not a Groundforce transformation, but its made it that bit more pleasant when you go round that way!
