The wilderness
that surrounds
by Rob Smith
Arriving
from Iran over two years ago, 36-year old artist Valid Sabbaghian
has been exhibiting his work at SYAC called ‘In the wilderness
that surrounds – art as an asylum identity card of the spirit’
during November.
A lot of Valid’s picture’s were created using many
different techniques and objects. “I use wheat, sand, wood,
foil, even computer parts and clover leaves, mixing them into the
paint”. One of the pictures depicting a large yellow flower
had been painted on leather.
Valid’s work also reflects the traditions of his country.
Over 2,500 years ago the kings of the Kourosh Kingdom and Hakhamanesh
Empire were presented with gold-embroidered and colourful paintings
by local people depicting celebrations of life.
"This is my ninth English art exhibition," explained
Valid, who has been all over the world exhibiting his work and mentioned
recent visits to Russia, Germany, Syria, Ireland and Australia.
As an asylum seeker, one of Valid’s main aims is to link
with other artists representing the diversity of cultures from around
our community.
