Kier say it
with flowers
by Louise Vennells
Last month the Messenger reported on tenants who
felt they had been neglected by council contractors, Kier Sheffield
(Housing repairs scandal issue
36, November 2003). Workmen left jobs unfinished for weeks.
As a result of our coverage, the organisation has changed its working
practices and following a full investigation, has issued an apology
to Mrs Shaibi and Mrs Kassim, both of Grimesthorpe Road.
Kier Service Manager, Simon Bullen, said he recognised work, including
kitchen unit replacements, joinery and work on floors had been slow.
He said: "A letter of apology has been delivered to Mrs Shaibi
and Mrs Kassim, along with a bouquet of flowers." Kier employees
made several visits to ensure all the work was completed satisfactorily
by 8th November.
The investigation found no evidence of Kier employees smoking or
drinking alcohol in the two homes. Mr Bullen said: "The one
individual that did smoke did so outside. Water, mango juice and
coffee were consumed on the premises, which had been kindly provided
by the tenant."
Mr Bullen said the company had improved job monitoring to halt
sloppy service: "Jobs will be flagged so that the oldest jobs
are done first and managed in a proactive manner. Hopefully this
will reduce this type of error and allow us to give better information
to the tenants as work progresses."
Mr Bullen stressed Kier are committed to health and safety, employee
conduct and customer service for tenants.
