Spotlight on Abbeyfield Park - by Gaby Spinks.

A Park full of history

The Abbeyfield Bowling Club first met on 3rd July 1913, in Abbeyfield Park House, presided over by Councillor C Wood. They charged one shilling for membership.

Fifty-nine people joined in their first year and by 1914 they had persuaded ‘the powers that be’ in the Town Hall to establish a second green.

They organised bowling competitions as well as whist drives, snooker tournaments and free places for wounded First World War soldiers, lodged at Firshill.

Parkie sorely missed

Another character from the park’s past is Eric Stokes the old Park Keeper. Until he retired in 1991 Eric lived in a flat in Abbeyfield Park House. He used to oversee maintenance and keep an eye out for mischief makers. Eric always had time for people, whether coaching their bowling or miniature golf techniques, clearing snow from their doors or even having a little chat with wayward children bent on destruction.

“He knew everybody’s name,” explained local resident and archivist Bernadette Lamb. “He kept a tight ship and was easily recognised by his beret and stick. If only we had someone like Eric now.”
