New plans to
revitalise the Wicker
The City Council and Renaissance
South Yorkshire have recently appointed a multi-disciplinary
team of consultants headed by Shared Intelligence to
develop a regeneration strategy for Nursery Street and
Wicker area to the north of the city centre.
The study will cover the network of streets
bordered by the River Don, the Wicker Arches and railway
viaduct to the North. The area contains many small businesses
and voluntary organisations and some landmark buildings,
as well as a number of vacant sites and properties.
Today, the area suffers from traffic congestion
and a poor quality environment. The City Council is
expecting that funding will be available to allow a
start on the northern stage of the Inner Relief Road
in 2004, benefiting an area which also affords many
opportunities, including the potential re-use of vacant
or derelict land and premises, improved pedestrian/cycle
linkages to the city centre and its close proximity
to the city centre, Kelham Island and Victoria Quays.
The study will also take into account current
regeneration work underway in the City Centre and in
the Burngreave New Deal and Netherthorpe and Upperthorpe
Community Alliance areas.
It is vital that all users of the Wicker/Nursery
Street area have a say in its future. The consultants
will be listening to a wide range of individuals and
groups over the coming months to hear their views on
the future.
A public workshop will be taking place at SADACCA,
4th December (from 3.00–8.00pm). Full refreshments
will be provided.
Have your say!
