Self-defence for women and girls

Self-defence is an issue that concerns us all. As martial arts classes can often be intimidating and impractical for many women and girls, Burngreave Sports Development team has joined forces with a female martial arts instructor to run weekly self-defence classes, strictly for women and girls only, at Fir Vale School Sports Centre.

The class combines fitness training with self-defence and martial arts techniques.

The instructor is Cathy Everard who holds a 2nd dan black belt. She has spent the past seven years living in Germany, China and Korea where she studied languages and trained in Taekwondo and Tai Chi.

Having lived in so many foreign countries, on returning to the UK, Cathy felt immediately at home in multicultural Burngreave and has decided to settle in the area.

“Self-defence training is a great stress-busting way to get fit. It’s inspiring to see how people’s confidence increases every time they train. When they start you often hear people say “I can’t do that!” Then, in a couple of weeks, their confidence starts to grow and they can’t believe what they are capable of.”

“Martial arts are often portrayed as being esoteric or something only ultra-fit people can do, when in reality they are accessible to everyone. When I trained in Korea and China I learnt that the most important thing is to strengthen your mind as well as your body. The only person you really compete against is yourself. You can progress at your own speed to become fitter and more alert than ever before.”

The Women’s and Girls’ Self-defence classes take place every Tuesday evening at Fir Vale School Sports Centre 7–8pm.
