Launch of Over-Arching Theme

Building Community Strength…

When the Government launched New Deal, they allowed local communities to suggest their own themes in addition to the key themes of Health, Education, Crime and Employment.

In Burngreave, the community recognised that there needed to be a theme supporting community strength to help residents to get involved with the regeneration of the area. This theme was called the “Over-Arching Theme”.

The three broad areas included in the Over-Arching Theme were:

Community Support – support to allow people to get involved such as childcare and Family Support.

Community Capacity Building – supporting community organizations and making sure we engage the whole community in regeneration.

Communication and Culture – including giving people access to Information Technology (IT), supporting Arts & Culture and communications, such as the Burngreave Messenger.

Key issues for the Over-Arching Theme will be:

  • Developing a Small Grants Fund to allocate up to £400,000 a year in grants of between £250 and £25,000 to local groups.
  • Supporting childcare across the area, especially developing childcare provision to support adult learners.
  • Developing an IT strategy for the area to wire up households to the internet and train up residents in IT.
  • Development of young people’s provision in the area, bringing Sheffield Futures and local youth groups together.
  • Developing a communications strategy for Burngreave, including an exciting new community radio project.

Come along to the first Over-Arching Theme Group at 6.00–8.00pm, Tuesday 11th November at The Furnival, Verdon Street and work with the BNDfC Partnership Board to help develop these important project areas, or contact new Over-Arching theme manager, Ian Clifford on 279 6933, or by email at ianclifford@bndfc.co.uk.
