Firshill School
event
by Rashida Hassanali (Community Education
Co-ordinator)
Saturday 11th October turned out
to be a bright, crisp morning, ideal for football, cricket and budding
artists. Over a hundred children and their parents, carers and families
joined in craft, sport and IT activities for Family Learning Weekend
at Firshill School.
Many families enjoyed ‘Beat the Goalie’ and football
games with Patrick Edwards and Craig Homer. Others stayed around
for cricket coaching with Steve Taylor. Keep Fit for women and girls
with Betty Croker was well attended. There was a real buzz about
the school hall as groups of adults and children had a go at clay
modelling, ‘hot’ beads and jewellery making, knitting,
decorating cakes and biscuits, painting, printing and mehndi body
art.
The IT room resembled an arcade with LearnDirect providing literacy
and numeracy-based computer games. The talent in our community is
a source of great pride and some of the children’s work and
photographs of the event can be seen in a display at the school.
Many thanks go to Sheffield City Council Sports Development workers
and Play Resources Team for their contribution to the day, and most
of all to those parents and members of the community who worked
together creatively to put on family learning activities and support
the event. People are asking when the next Fun Day will be. I say
Watch This Space!
