Carwood Mini
Market Opens
by Rob Smith
With full support from BNDfC, on the 18th September Khalid
and Nugat Hussain, along with their young family, have taken on
a brave venture by opening Carwood’s local shop and mini market.
“We are regularly stocking the shop,” explained Khalid.
“All we want to do is live peacefully and help serve the local
people here,” added Nugat, serving customers from behind a
counter displaying an assortment of sweets and chocolate items.
“At present we’re open from 7am till 10pm seven days
a week Rob,” explained their sixteen-year-old son Amin.
“They have had a few problems being accepted by a small element
that represent some of our local youth,” added Jean Wood,
Chair of ASTRA. “Also Robert, they are having a problem providing
fresh milk and bread in the morning that local residents can purchase.”
I glanced at the small baby held in the arms of Nugat, listening
to every word, as Jean Wood continued explaining the problems the
shop have been having with receiving their early morning deliveries.
Young Amin nodded, acknowledging the claim that he and his father
had to travel to a supermarket every morning to purchase these items.
Jean went on to explain that future plans for the shop are to sell
daily newspapers as well as different food stuffs from around the
world, representing the Carwood community’s growing diversity.
“We are just here to help provide a service for the people
of Carwood. We help them and we need their support too,” Nugat
smiled and her baby daughter laughed. I wanted to take this picture
of the whole family behind their counter. Leaving them the promise
that I’d follow up their story and problems.
