Somali Education
Breakthrough
by Rob Smith
With offices based at the Furnival, 199 Verdon Street,
I went along to speak to Somali Education Breakthrough Project co-ordinator
Abdo Gass, who explained to me more about this initiative.
“We have classes that offer subject support for
children between the age of 10 to 16 and concentrate on Somali and
English. Most of the teaching is done at Kilton Hill but we will
be relocating downstairs here at the Furnival very soon.”
The project also offers a community language school based at the
Furnival every Saturday from 1–3pm, providing language and
study support, it aims to teach written Somali so that children
don’t forget their own cultural identity. They also use experienced
teachers to help teach the history of England and its language.
Plans for activities this summer include - trip to Alton Towers,
football coaching, girls’ basketball, playscheme, and advice
and information workshops about education, health and employment.
For more information contact Abdo Gass on 275 9040 or 0790 355 7613.
