Supporting business
in Burngreave
Business in Burngreave should
soon be on the up, thanks to the appointment of Saghir Ahmed as
the area’s new Business and Enterprise Champion. Saghir takes
up his new post at the beginning of June and his role will be to
encourage entrepreneurship and provide practical support and advice
to small businesses, sole traders, and local residents who want
to get their own business started.
Although he lives in Sheffield, Saghir’s
most recent job was as a Business Adviser in Huddersfield, where
he provided one to one business support and counselling to clients
wanting to get started in self-employment.
The appointment is part of a two-year
initiative – the Burngreave Creating Enterprise, Supporting
Business project funded by BNDfC – which will provide practical
advice and support to remove the barriers that prevent residents
from taking the risk of starting up in self employment, and tackle
the problems facing the area’s businesses, such as isolation,
lack of focused support from mainstream support agencies, a low
rate of business start-ups, and a focus on survival rather than
growth.
Sheffield Business Broker John Barber,
of Business in the Community, which is working with BNDfC to deliver
the project, said that he was delighted with Saghir’s appointment:
“Saghir is an experienced
business counsellor who has a strong background in offering support
to people wanting to set up their own businesses and work for themselves.
We’re really pleased to welcome him as Burngreave’s
first Business and Enterprise Champion and are confident that he
will help to make a major difference to business development in
the area.”
The new project will be based in the
heart of Burngreave and Saghir will be joined by administrator Stacey
Givans who will be providing essential support in what promises
to be a very busy role.
