Citizenship
Day at Fir Vale School On 19th February a Citizenship Day was held at Fir Vale School. This was a collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, in a 'Widening Participation' project, designed to encourage young people to think about a university education. A number of lecturers and academic staff attended to talk to pupils about subjects such as health, law and homelessness. Senior Social Work Lecturer Judy Boxer said: "We spoke to Year 7 about issues to do with social problems that affect our community, Rob, such as mental illness. This is a very difficult subject to teach at degree level let alone to eleven years olds, but I was very impressed at the way Fir Vale pupils contributed openly and with understanding of such deep issues that can effect us all in this life." A visit is planned for pupils and parents to visit Hallam University so they can see first hand what happens there.
