Mayor launches young people’s mural
The
Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Marjorie Barker, has officially
launched a mural, which has been designed and created by young
people.
The mural
shows positive images of black people and includes Martin
Luther King, Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X.
The aim
of the mural, which is based at Fir Vale Youth Centre, is
to show that whatever a person’s religion, culture or
race, they can get along together peacefully.
Nine young
people have completed the work over two months as part of
a youth project, run by the Fir Vale Youth Project.
The mural
marks a miraculous transformation of the youth centre. Only
twelve months ago the building had no central heating, burst
water pipes and wasn’t decorated. Today, thanks to a
lot of hard work by staff and the community the centre is
a popular meeting place for the area’s young people.
Islam
Khan, worker in charge of the Fir Vale Youth Project, said:
“The young people have done an excellent job with the
mural, they really put their heart into the work.”
David
Gault, Director of Operations for Sheffield Futures, who also
attended the launch, added: “This is a stunning piece
of work created by the young people and the community artist.
This mural will stimulate the conversations of young people
and all of those who use this building from now on.”
Cllr Barker
also presented plaques to the young people involved in the
project to mark their hard work and commitment.
