Burngreave’s Night
On
31st October, Burngreave residents turned out in droves to
see two contrasting productions at St Catherine’s Hall
on Burngreave Road to help raise funds for The Friends of
Burngreave Chapel and Cemetery.
A packed
hall enjoyed a boisterous production of Techno Prisoners (described
as ‘A contemporary ultra violet fairytale’), written
and directed by Patrick Amber. Techno Prisoners is a combination
of dance, techno music (mixed live), narration and wildly
colourful costumes and scenery telling the story of lost and
found smiles, scheming cats, love and heartbreak, and finding
out who matters in the end. Exciting stuff and hugely enjoyable.
After
a short interval a combination of professional and amateur
actors performed Stephen Spender’s interpretation of
the Oedipus story directed by Daniel Poyser. In contrast with
Techno Prisoners, this was a sparse affair with minimal costumes,
lighting and props. The power of this performance came from
the strong performances of the cast and the strength of the
script and direction. The Oedipus story is well known and
therefore the cast had their work cut out in unfurling the
increasingly horrific tale while keeping the audience gripped.
I am pleased to say they managed it in fine style.
