Executive Director’s Update

Hi, my name is John Clark and I was recently appointed as Executive Director for Burngreave New Deal for Communities. If you want to know a little more about me, there was an article in the last edition of the Burngreave Messenger.

I hope to make this update a regular slot, to keep the community of Burngreave informed about the issues I am involved in along with the New Deal board and staff team.

I started work at the New Deal for Communities office in Albion House on Monday 15th July 2002. Yes, I know, this isn’t in the New Deal area! We are already looking at this and expect to have some positive news about relocating into the area in the next edition.

I have moved into a flat in the area and hope to use this as an opportunity to meet local residents and get a clear understanding of the issues and opportunities that are important to you.

I have received a warm welcome from everybody I have met so far and have sensed a real passion about wanting to make New Deal work.

I really believe that we can put past disappointments behind us, and work together to improve the quality of life for everyone in Burngreave.

As I am writing this on only my third day in post, you can expect a lot more about what is being delivered with New Deal support in the next edition, Until then ….John

BURNGREAVE - A TREMENDOUS HERITAGE

The Language Support Conference on Thursday 18 July at SADACCA was well attended with nearly forty people from a wide range of organisations and local residents.

The conference included feedback on the recent report and progress with the consortium and the agency. Important questions were asked and constructive comments made on how the agency will work in practice. People also acknowledged that a great deal of high quality work had been completed at great speed, and that the Language Support Agency has a key role to play. As Mike Reynolds, consortium member, said: ‘We are in a multicultural and multilingual area which has diversity and richness and a tremendous heritage that the Language Support Agency must foster.’

Joice Richards

Joice Richards.I am the newly appointed Housing and Environmental Theme Manager. I have worked in Housing for over 17 years, initially for Sheffield City Council and most recently with Northern Counties Housing Association.

Why New Deal?
I have chosen to work for Burngreave New Deal having lived and worked in Sheffield all my life. I have got family and friends that live in the area and would like to work with the residents of Burngreave to make the necessary changes to the Housing stock and the environment.

Housing and the Environment includes not just the houses but also the shops, parks, roads and open spaces which all need substantial financial investment to improve them. New Deal plans to work with local people, and local residents have already identified what changes/improvements are needed to the well-used shops, the housing both private and rented and to the roads and parks making them safer for the children of Burngreave to use.

The improvements to houses, shops and open spaces, gives Burngreave New Deal an excellent opportunity to create training and employment opportunities for local people

New Deal will work with local Voluntary and Community groups, the Local Authority and other funders to bring together the necessary funding to carryout the much needed improvements, to make Burngreave a place where people really want to live.

Magda Boo

Magda Boo.I am the new Theme Manager (Health & Crime) for Burngreave New Deal for Communities. My background is working in voluntary and community organisations as well as within the NHS. I have lived in Sheffield for 6 years and worked in Burngreave for 3 years.

The New Deal for Communities is an exciting opportunity for the community to be involved in tackling the problems of this area. We also need to remember and celebrate the successes, creativity and diversity of Burngreave residents.

Residents in the New Deal area came up with a number of different problems of health and crime that they wanted to see tackled this year. Examples of these are ‘anti-social behaviour’ and drug use. Theme Groups draw on the expertise of people who live in the area to help us understand exactly how these problems affect your lives. We can’t do this without your help and so we will be regularly asking for your views and feedback.

We use your feedback to work with Voluntary and Community groups, Sheffield City Council, the NHS and to make sure the services they provide address the problems you have identified. We also help develop new projects. We want to bring lasting benefit to this community.

Please get in touch if you would like to be more involved in the work of BNDfC. I can be contacted on 0114 292 0394 or magdaboo@bndfc.co.uk.
I will also be coming to meetings and events in the area and hope to meet you there.
