Local Councillor Calls Meeting on School Results

Councillor Ibrar Hussain, Chair of Burngreave Area Panel, recently attended a meeting in Sharrow at which Education officers were giving a presentation about achievement levels of ethnic minority children in local schools.

Cllr Hussain was concerned by some of what he heard and insisted that the presentation be made in Burngreave.

It is hoped that this meeting will present school achievement results for children from all the communities in Burngreave whether they go to schools this side of the City or not.

Cllr Hussain said:

"I myself am the parent of four children and I feel that it's absolutely vital that we as

parents hear this sort of information that can be so important to our children's future. I'll look forward to seeing you on the 21st"

Shock as Government Office turns down Neighbourhood Learning Centre proposal

The community is reacting with shock and anger at rumours that Government Office has turned down a bid to support a feasibility study and training for those working to set up neighbourhood learning centres.

A consortium involving Neville Drive, The Vestry Hall, Urban Theology Group, Hindu Samaj put in a New Deal Capacity Building bid to look at where to put neighbourhood learning centres and help build the groups wanting to develop neighbourhood provision.

Members of the Burngreave Adult Learner's Forum reacted with shock to news of the bids failure for which no explanation has yet been given. If true, many would see the decision as at odds with the Government's policy of supporting locally based adult learning delivered and managed by local people.

Those involved with the consortium felt it was essential to do the work on feasibility and training now during phase 2 on New Deal so the community is well placed to move quickly to establish neighbourhood learning centres when phase 3 starts

Local Councillor Steve Jones is writing to Government Office asking them to reconsider. Watch this space!

The Burngreave IT Partnership
- Let's get Wired!

The Burngreave IT Partnership ( Bitpart ) formed in November with the aim of working towards providing Internet access to every household in Burngreave through the New Deal for Communities.
We are formed from a number of organisations within the area including Pitsmoor On-line, The Burngreave Messenger and the Highway Internet Café.

We are also working towards the development of a Community Information Network for Burngreave - we hope that this network will contain something for everyone - on-line games for kids, on-line music software, historical forums, multi-cultural forums in many different languages, and also access to general information that you might need - houses for rent, jobs etc.

We will be holding a conference in March to find out more about what you might like to see in this network, and also to demonstrate some of the uses of Information Technology that are around at this time - more details will follow in the next edition.

If you want to know more -
please call 0114 244 3577 and ask to speak to Rodney or check out our website and e-mailing list at www.inetd.f9.co.uk/bitpart

Because we're worth it

Our children and young people deserve the same post 16 education as other parts of the city - local, high quality, academic and vocational education. This was the message from a meeting of parents to consider post 16 provision.

Firshill School hosted a meeting of 25 parents and headteachers from Fir Vale and Parkwood Schools. The discussion focused on what we would like to see and how we could lobby/campaign for that.

The present situation shows varying provision across the city with seven 6th forms and Sheffield College provision in the South West. The only provision in the North East being Parson Cross College.

There are discussions underway at the moment about the future of post 16 provision and we need to ensure that our young people have local access to the best in academic and vocational education.

If you also believe we need high quality post 16 education, delivered locally with clear links to local secondary schools and full pastoral support for young people. If you also believe our young people have the ability to succeed - they need the local facilities and resources to do so, then please contact:-

We are now beginning to hold parents meetings in secondary schools, lobby politicians and raise the profile - we need your help.
