A NEW FACE
I am glad to say that Marilyn King started working 2 ½ days a week with the Burngreave Area Panel at the beginning of January but I will let her introduce her self ... ‘Hi I am Marilyn King, newly appointed Support Officer for the Burngreave Area Panel. This is a new, exciting and challenging post that I am anxious to get to grips with. I feel it will be somewhat different to my last job as Information Assistant for Social Services, which I did for 14 years. Both this job and my last one have some things in common including giving out information and working with the community. As a local resident I am a keen to get started and hope to make a difference for everyone in Burngreave and also to help Stuart in supporting your Area Panel. I feel that Burngreave has a lot of potential and with all the people who live and work coming together the more we can get done’ ... I would just like to add that Marilyn will be working the other 2 ½ days of the week as Support Worker for the Brightside and Shiregreen Area Panel.
LANDFILL FUTURE
The Council’s Cabinet, which is a committee of 10 Liberal Democrat Councillors who make the major decisions in the Council, met on the 24th December 2001 to talk about what your Area Panel had asked them to do about the Parkwood landfill site and Shirecliffe Dump-it site. You had asked for:
• a local Health Assessment Survey
• an Air Quality Monitoring station in Shirecliffe
• the moving of the Dump-it site
• the closing of Parkwood landfill site
Local people were there at the meeting to ask the Cabinet questions. Copies of the minutes of this meeting are on the Councils web site at www.sheffield.gov.uk As I write, the Council’s Scrutiny Board has decided that the decisions the Cabinet made needs to be looked at and there will be a public meeting about this on 16th January 2002. The Area Panel will be at this meeting to make sure that your questions are answered and to request that members of the Cabinet attend your next Burngreave Area Panel meeting on the future of the Parkwood landfill site (see below)

PLANNING A BETTER BURNGREAVE
At your last Area Panel on 10th January 2002 we talked about the consultation for the new Unitary Development Plan. This is the plan says what can and can’t be built in Burngreave and effects what the area may look like in years to come. You can read more about this at Burngreave library and on the Council’s web site or you can telephone 273 4157.
We have set up four dates when you can come and tell us what you think the issues for Burngreave and Sheffield are and I will be there along with Maria Duffy from the Council’s Planning Department. The first two hours are for women only and after that anyone can drop in for as long as they want. From 6.30 to 8.30 pm we will be having a full public meeting to let you talk about the issues. The dates for the meetings are:
• Verdon Street Recreation Centre, Verdon Street on 4th February 2002 starting at 1.00 p.m.

LOCAL ADVOCATE
Your Area Panel is pleased to tell you that we have awarded £15,000 a year for the next three years from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. This to help the Fir Vale Pakistani Community Association and Advice Centre to employ an Advocacy Worker. This worker will increase the help the Pakistani Community Association and other services can give to people in your area.

STREETFORCE TEAM
Your dedicated Streetforce environment team, which is funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, has been very busy in Burngreave over the last few months. I hope that you will have seen the extra work they have done including clearing land around Osgathorpe Drive, the steps at the top of Grimesthorpe Road and tackling the litter on Scott Road. Also, Pete Townsend, the Burngreave Assistant Area Manager for Streetforce, has been meeting with local groups who have contacted the Area Panel with problems around street cleaning.

You can meet your local Councillors at their regular surgeries. These are at:
• Burngreave Library, Spital Hill - every Saturday 11.00 to 12.00 pm
