Shops and businesses that feature most

by Rob Smith

Malcolm X Book shop.

Brother Isaac, a devout Muslim, set up Malcolm X book store over three years ago. Now a major attraction situated at the mouth of Spital Hill, I paid a visit to the highly decorated premises. Inside I was welcomed into the relaxed atmosphere, colourful surroundings and scented smells of aromatic herbs, spices and oils. My eyes focused on an array of African Caribbean books, pictures and cosmetics. Videos leading the way to the eastern provinces, Muslim clothing and religious artefacts. Take it from me, for small festive gifts this has to be a shop worth visiting.

Ashram Wholefood shop

Ashram shop owners John and Grace Vincent have opened their second shop here explained Marcia Brown and Sheila Webster, both volunteer’s present the day I arrived. “They have a shop in Glossop Road that’s popular with students.” they continued. This shop here’s been open for about two months and proceeds go towards making a better deal for those living in The Third World. Amidst a small café environment lay an array of healthy living food supplies. Nuts, pickled and dried fruits, Earl Grey and Assam teas and coffees, breads and healthy grain dried foods. Marcia proudly displayed textile works of art quilt covers, valance sheets and cushions. On display close by crafts and books introducing information about the Ashram community. On the way out is a counter full of fresh home made cakes, pastries and breads, courtesy of The Real Bread Bake House. Opening hours from Tuesday - Saturday 11am - 2pm. Tel: 272 1971

The Friendly Computer shop

Now moved from one side of the Wicker to the other the lads of Friendly Computer are still supplying the same good and affordable service to all the people and community organisations in and around Burngreave. Lou and Roger began in computer sales over six years ago and Roger went on to inform me of their latest offers. “ Laptops with CDs at £385, many reconditioned at affordable prices, we build computers from new, or reconditioned, we also carry out repairs and upgrades.” Friendly Computers is open from 10am - 6pm Monday to Saturday.
