New Hindu community and cultural centre opensThe Lord Mayor Councillor David Baker opened the new Hindu Samaj on Sunday 25 November. Other distinguished guests included Richard Caborn, local MP and sports minister, and community leaders. The Hindu community and cultural centre was opened with over 250 people crammed into the main hall, who heard speeches from the Mayor, the President, Shiv Sharma, other founder speakers and Martin Davies, Deputy Chief Constable from South Yorkshire Police, who were all pleased to open the new centre and enthusiastic of the incredible work done so far and the future prospects. Young people in the community provided entertainment of poetry, classical and Bollywood dancing and doli playing. Community members then consumed a delicious traditional Indian meal prepared by the Hindu Temple. Some of the activities for the future include: providing health information and advice for women, support for the elderly, expanding further education programmes, counselling and mentoring support to lone parents and single people, welfare advice and information for the community and teaching classical music and dance in the region The new centre is based on 21 Buckenham Street, Sheffield S4. |
