New Deal Votes Money for Local 6th Form

On October 30th, the Burngreave New Deal for Communities Partnership Board made a historic decision by voting to commit a “substantial sum” of money towards the building of a local 6th Form College in the North East of Sheffield. The decision was supported by both community and statutory representatives, with nobody voting against the proposals. The campaign for a local 6th form to raise the aspirations of young people in the area has been pursued vigorously by the local community, including a 1500 name petition. The board’s move could mean around one million pounds going towards the building of the proposed college, with the Learning and Skills Council paying most of the building and all of the running costs. The final say lies with the Learning and Skills Council with a decision expected in January. Sally Robinson, from the 6th form campaign said: “We are delighted with the decision of Burngreave New Deal for Communities, it very practically shows the strength of local support. The Learning & Skills Council now has the opportunity to show that it will embrace a new approach that has the support of pupils, schools and parents. We need to continue our campaigning to ensure they make the right decision and that the community has a say in the new college as it develops.” Contact: Sally Robinson on 242 0865
