Pitsmoor Against the War

by John from PATWAR

Up to forty people marched behind out PATWAR banner in the recent march against the war through the streets of Sheffield. In one of the biggest demonstrations for years about two thousand of us showed that there is much more opposition to this war than Mr Blair and Mr Bush would have us believe. Our group was made up of young and old, black and white. It was great to be able to have so many people from different cultures and backgrounds marching together, sharing ideas and common concerns, as well as having serious but respectful debates about politics, religious ideas, and what next we could do to involve more from our communities. We all agreed that we should go down to London on the 18th of November and that there were enough of us to book our own coach and leave from Pitsmoor. (For details about tickets please phone 2755581) Spital Hill Garage (a posher version of speakers corner) We also organised an event at the garage last Saturday. After we had cleaned the place up a bit we got a sound system going, gave out leaflets to passers by and encouraged people to give their opinions about the war. Obviously some were against what we were doing and told us so, others were unsure about their feelings and wanted to listen or ask questions. Others came and volunteered to be involved. All in all it was well worth doing and we shall be there again on Saturdays. We also had a condolence book for people to sign who wished to express their sympathy and sorrow for all those who had been killed or injured in America and the Middle East. If any others want to get involved you will be more than welcome. Lastly, we promise to paint over the slogans and return the garage to its former glory if and when we can get this “War against Terrorism” stopped.
