The Jewel in Burngreave’s Crown

The Friends of Burngreave Cemetery and Chapel have been working hard in the last year highlighting the need to protect this amazing place of outstanding natural beauty and its Chapel. In recent months the council has fixed the Chapel’s long broken roof and the Cemetery has received a visit from English Heritage. We hope to bring the building back into use as an inter-cultural arts centre and create a place where everyone is welcome. Some members of the group are organising an Art and Spiritually week in St Catherine’s Hall putting on the kind of activities that may eventually take place in the Chapel itself and we are hoping to get one side of the chapel up to minimum Health and Safety standards by next summer. We have been written into next year’s New Deal strategy and we are looking to apply for National Heritage funding. For this we need to constitute and form a management committee, although our group is 80 strong and growing fast we still need more people who can give an hour or two a week.
