Burngreave Messenger.

Organisational background

The Burngreave Messenger Ltd is a community managed, not for profit, limited company, first established in 1999. We have received core funding from Burngreave New Deal for Communities since December 2002. This funding is confirmed until November 2006.

This core funding pays for the production of 10 issues per year of The Burngreave Messenger and its delivery to over 6000 homes in Burngreave.

In addition to the New Deal funding, the Messenger Ltd earns revenue through selling advertising space and design work. We have also received funding from the Centre For Full Employment, who funded a web developer for a year through the Step Up Scheme.

As a limited company, the Messenger is managed by its directors, who are all volunteers from the local community. The management committee contains significant expertise and has active personnel and funding groups.

The Messenger employs a staff team consisting of a Project Co-ordinator, a Finance Manager (part time), two Development Workers (both part time) , a Web-developer, a Designer (part time) and an Office Administrator (part time). We also provide work opportunities, aimed primarily at local young people, as part of our substantial team of collators and distributors.

A wide range of community contributors take part in the production of the magazine each month. There is a large group of regular volunteers who compile, edit and proof the issues, through the editorial group which is facilitated by the Project Coordinator.

We systematically record and gather community feedback about the Messenger, which is overwhelming positive. Distribution is carefully monitored and we have achieved our aim of ensuring 90% of copies being delivered within a short period. Demand for the Messenger remains high both within Burngreave and the Sheffield wide voluntary/community sector.

If you live outside the area you can subscribe to the Messenger for just £10 per year.

If you live in Burngreave but you are not receiving the Messenger please contact us.

You can also join our 'announce' email list, which lets people know when the website has been updated with a new issue to download or a new job.

If you would like to get involved in the Messenger either as part of our management committee or our editorial team please get in touch.
