Placing an Advert

Generally, if the information you would like to include is to promote an event or service then this is an advert.

The Messenger's advert rates are available from our office; adverts are priced individually based on the number of words and the design requirements. Discount rates are available for Burngreave Community Groups. The benefit of buying space in the Messenger is that once it has been agreed it is guaranteed to go in. If you ask for free space or you request an article these can be cut at any time by the editorial team.

General guidelines
Adverts should contain all the relevant information –
Event adverts should include: date, time, place, organiser, and activities
Dates for events should be at least 5 days after the Messenger goes out.

The quality of the content is very important, it must be easy to understand and relevant to Burngreave, Messenger staff may ask you to change things if the meaning is unclear or if too many words are used. The Messenger also has a policy not to promote children’s activities for groups who cannot show they have a child protection policy.

Adverts need to be booked by the copy deadline, but space in the Messenger fills up quickly so if you have something important to advertise get in touch as soon as you know you will need space. If you miss the copy deadline its still worth contacting us as space may become available during the production of the issue.

The most common size for an advert is a quarter page, you can fit about 125- 150 words in to this space. Community Groups can buy a quarter page advert, in black and white from £40. We also sell smaller and larger spaces. If you need more than a quarter page, or you would like to buy a whole page, a decision to include it has to be made by the editorial team - they have to decide whether the content is interesting and important enough to be allocated a large space. You will also need to get in touch at least a week before the copy deadline so that there is enough time to make decisions and put the content together.

Job adverts
It important that job adverts are clear and contain all the necessary information; the deadline must also allow applicants a fair chance to respond. The Messenger must ensure the quality of these adverts is high as residents must be able to trust their accuracy.
Job adverts must include: job title, salary, hours per week, brief description of the duties, how to get application form, deadline for applications, employer, and contact information.
The deadline for applications should be at least 2 weeks, preferably 3 weeks, from when the Messenger is published.

Leaflets
The Messenger has space for three A4 leaflets in each issue; this space is often booked quickly so make sure you request it as soon as you know you will need it. A separate leaflet is good if you want to distribute lots of information about your project which is unlikely to fit in the Messenger itself, a newsletter for example. This costs £80 to put in the Messenger, for an additional £20 the leaflet can also be sent to our mailing list. You also need to think about the print and design costs of the leaflet. The Messenger can help with this if you ask in good time before the distribution date. To find out more see our design services.
