Verdon Street Age Well Group
by Rob Smith
Every Wednesday between 1.30pm and 3.30pm
some elderly members from our community get together for an
afternoon of association inside Verdon Recreation Centre,
providing their own coffee, tea, bingo games and prizes.
Initiated by Betty Bramhall and Madge Sheldon,
this group have been meeting at the Recreation Centre for
over 15 years, they explained.
Last September the group was granted funding
to visit Banbury Gardens near York. “We had a lovely
day and the weather was sunny,” said Delia Chadwick
of Kilton Hill. “We walked around a lake full of fish
– so tame they ate from our hands. The lake is home
to over one hundred varieties of water lily.” The group
explored a secret garden designed by students from nearby
Bishop Burton College of Agriculture in York. “There
was a statue of a lady with a water fountain around her feet.”
explained Delia. “We all sat and smelt the lavender,
rose and different shrubs before our lunch in the tea rooms
and visit upstairs to Major Stewart’s tour around the
Museum.”
The Age Well group also managed to fund a visit
to Cleethorpes and appreciate having had two good days out
as a group. “Thanks to that grant from Burngreave New
Deal,” adds Delia.
Verdon Street Age Well group meet every Wednesday
and if you’re a senior citizen and would like to join
this group please contact Mink Naylor at Verdon Recreation
