Where have all
the houses gone?

The Woodside Update
The shortage of family homes in the area means that some
tenants facing demolition of their homes on Woodside and Pye Bank
who want to stay in this community may well be onto a lost cause,
despite having maximum council points.
Mrs Gregory of Fox Street was more than annoyed and angry concerning
the impression given in our September edition that ‘some are
waiting for the increase in the home loss payment’ (see A
Migration Of Vermin).
“I’m not a scrounger and don’t like
that insinuation, all we want is to stay here in Burngreave, but
the council can’t find us a house the same size as this one.
That’s were our problems begin.”
I also revisited Linda Horsefield, another Fox Street resident
who was smiling and very happy that by the end of the week she’d
be re-housed to premises she wanted in Burngreave
“I didn’t get help from the council though
Rob, I had to go straight to Arches Housing, It’s very nice
there and I thank them very much for all their assistance.”
I also trekked to the rubble of the full on demolition taking place
at the top of Pye Bank Drive, where the only occupied house belonged
to Jan Hodgkins. Although she looked no worse for wear the scene
around her was demolition at its peak. “We’re supposed
to be going this week,” she said, adding “thanks.”

Asbestos warning
Burngreave Housing Office have issued letters to residents
living near Gray Street maisonettes advising them that asbestos
has been found in the plaster inside this building.
The block has been screened and the windows of the building
covered so workers can remove the asbestos safely.
The process could take 4–6 weeks. Blocks on Andover
Drive are being tested and could be subject to the same process.
If you have any concerns please contact the Housing Office
on 203 9342. |
