Abdul Hassan and Mahamood Ali have been creating
the space and time for basketball involving local young
Somali youth since 2001.
“This has grown to involve kids from
many different cultures,” explains Abdul Hassan.
“We use Verdon Recreation Centre and youths come
here to play basketball every Thursday and Saturday
evenings, 7–10pm and it’s open to all.”
Abdul also explains their initiative is to create and
establish a youth basketball team that can represent
the whole of Burngreave. Creating dedication Mahamood
and Abdul are now moving towards organising tournaments
against other community teams across the city.
Abdul believes it is very important that funding bodies
take notice of the work they are doing. Creating a Youth
Basketball team to represent Burngreave is a major goal
that should receive full support from Burngreave Sports
Network and Sports Development Team.
