Kashmir Educational Trust Study Support
by Mohammed Younis and Gaby Spinks

The Kashmir Educational Trust (KET) came into existence in the 1980s to raise awareness of the educational and cultural needs of the Pakistani/Kashmiri community here in Sheffield.

The 1985 KET team on their visit to Kashmir.

In 1985 KET organised the Kashmir Relief Project. KET members collected a 40-foot container load of clothing and cash donations of over £10,000 from the Asian community of Burngreave and neighbouring areas for the benefit of the displaced people encamped on the ceasefire-line dividing the two parts of Kashmir.

Presently KET is organising ‘Study Support classes’ for the young Pakistani/Kashmiri students living in Burngreave, aged between 8–16years.

Project Manager, Mohammed Younis said, “We are aware of our youth not achieving as well as they should be and are anxious to redress the issue.”

They are setting up weekend schools at Firshill and Pyebank Schools, starting in late September. The classes will run on Saturdays and Sundays, between 10am and 2pm so as not to conflict with Mosque school. Subjects covered will be Maths, Science and English.

Part-time staff will soon be employed and they are also currently looking for three ILM (Intermediate Labour Market) workers to work with local schools.

If you are interested in attending the classes either as a student, teacher or ILM worker please call Mohammed Younis on 272 8811 daytime, or 242 3855 evenings.
