Tuesday June 15th and the sun had shone all week and what
a time for our first local primary school cricket tournament to
begin. This was to be two afternoons of cricket followed up by a
final a week later.
Driven by Katy Burnett and Geoff Maltby of Burngreave
Sports Project, the event was held at the purpose-built pitch on
Whiteways school playing field.
The tournament began with St Catherine’s school
versus Firs Hill with St Catherine’s opting to field first.
I saw a wonderful display of cricket and was fully entertained.
St Caths beat Firs Hill by 11 runs (123–112),
and went onto tocomplete a double, beating Pye bank by 51 runs (151–100).
Pye Bank then played Firs Hill and lost by 10 runs (125–115).
Wednesday afternoon saw the young stars of competition
hosts Whiteways School, play Phillimore and won by 16 runs (124–108).
Byron Wood were sadly beaten by Phillimore 102–133. Byron
Wood then faced Whiteways and again narrowly lost 131–134.
The final showdown between St Catherine’s and
Whiteways ended with victory for Whiteways by 11 runs (136–125).
