Area Panel Meetings Update
Building work on the new Longley Park Sixth Form started
in June, and will be opening in September 2004. This is some of
the exciting news we heard about in May at the Area Panel meeting
on Education. Sheena Clarke and Tony Tingle told us about work with
adults, including the Community Learning Campaign and Bob Gregory
gave us an update on how our children are doing at school.
Steve Farnsworth and Longley Park Sixth Form Principal, John Bishop
answered your questions about the new school. People wanted to know
how the needs of the different cultures and religions are being
taken into account and how it would help provide the role models
our young people need. At the meeting you agreed that we should
write to the Longley Park Governors and look into what was being
done to make sure there are enough interpretators for those that
need them.
Making sure children can cross Barnsley Road in safety was something
that everyone agreed on in July at a Special Area Panel meeting
on road safety. Howard Saffer told us about the two road safety
schemes that had been suggested:
- An improved pedestrian crossing outside Firs Hill School
- New traffic lights at Scott Road and Barnsley Road junction
After talking about the good and bad points of each everyone agreed
an improved pedestrian crossing was the best option.
When the Council’s Planning Board meets to make the final
decision on this your Area Panel will tell them your views on what
you want to happen.
