Queen
celebrates Firvale school success
Residents from all sections of the community
turned out to celebrate Fir Vale Secondary School being officially
opened by the Queen.
The school, which serves a disadvantaged community
and has more asylum seeker children than any other school in the
city, is in the top 5% nationally on measures of progress made by
pupils at GCSE.
Headteacher Hugh Howe, pictured right with the
Queen, told the Messenger,
“This was celebration of the
success of the school, but it is also a symbol of the regeneration
of the area. The plaque, unveiled by the Queen, is in four different
languages and represents the fact that we are from within the community,
with children from a range of cultural backgrounds.”
