Euro-cash
for Fir Vale and Firshill
by Ian Clifford
Firshill
and Fir Vale will share in £800,000 of European ‘Objective
One’ money in the next few years. While the whole of Burngreave
will benefit, it will be targeted at areas outside New Deal; Firshill,
Fir Vale, Whiteways, Wensley Estate and parts of Grimesthorpe and
Shirecliffe.
Burngreave Community
Action Forum (BCAF) and Fir Vale Forum (FVF) insisted a grass roots
organisation manages the money rather than New Deal, a view which
John Clark, Chief Executive of New Deal, now supports. Burngreave
Community Action Trust will manage the money, working closely in
partnership with New Deal.
A ‘Community
Action Plan’ has been put together by a ground-breaking partnership
of the two Community Forums; Area Panel and New Deal. Tammy Pear
of FVF said the priority in Fir Vale is to employ development workers
to involve local people and develop future plans.
People from
the Firshill estate, where crime and poor transport are frequently
raised as issues, also need to be involved in decisions about how
the money is to be spent.
Timetables are
tight and the initial plans will be circulated at the BCAF Quarterly
Forum on Saturday 17th May, 11.00am onwards at Christ Church Hall,
Nottingham Street.
BCAF and the
FVF will be holding meetings about the plans later in the year,
for details contact BCAF on 272 8008.
